Why Socks Matter

Shelters consistently name socks as their most requested clothing item, and at the same time one of their least donated. A pair of socks sounds small until you consider what it does for someone sleeping outside or walking miles a day: warmth, protection, and a little dignity.

The need is also a health issue. Research published through the National Library of Medicine has found that up to two-thirds of people experiencing homelessness report foot health problems, from painful blisters to infections that need follow-up care. Clean, dry socks are one of the simplest defenses there is.
